PINE RIVER -- Walter "Walt" J. Bunte, 84, Pine River, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at home.
He was born Aug. 3, 1917, in Hubbard, Iowa, to Henry and Meta Bunte. He graduated from the Hubbard Public School in Hubbard, Iowa, in 1936. After high school he worked at a local Sinclair service station, which he later purchased. He served in the Army Signal Corps in the South Pacific. He married Marjorie F. Moore on April 4, 1941, in New Providence, Iowa. He worked in Iowa for 30 years as a salesman in the petroleum equipment field. In 1979 they retired to Big Portage Lake near Backus. He was active in the Big Portage Lake Association and the Cass/Hubbard Amateur Radio Club. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 613 in Pine River and a life member of the Radiant Lodge No. 366 Order of Masons in Alden, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Carolyn Ballard, Moorhead; a son, John Bunte, Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Clara Huen, Eldora, Iowa.
A brother, Harvey, died earlier.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Kline Funeral Home in Pine River with Pastor Dan Doughty officiating.
Friends may call an hour before services Friday at the funeral home.
