GARRISON - Randy Sturm of Brainerd was named the Wally Scheer and Associates Racing Mechanic of the Year April 27 during the WSA's awards banquet at the Blue Goose Inn.
Sturm was voted on by the WSA racers and crew. He was his son, Colton's, crew chief and assisted with mostly Ski-Doo racers but helped other racers and other brand name sleds.
Area racers receiving recognition were Ken Lacy of Brainerd on his Polaris, Ski-Doo racers Jordan Sherwood and his father, Steve Sherwood, both of Pine River, and Colton Sturm of Nisswa.
Lacy, a rookie, who raced in only half of the WSA-Pro Ice rounds, won the Sportsman 600, Sportsman 800 and Formula 500 points championships.
Jordan Sherwood won the WSA Hillcross Jackson X class points title for the second year in a row, finished second in the Pro Open class, third in the Pro 800 class and fourth in the Pro 900 class. He actually tied for second in Pro 800 but was scored as third because of a tie-breaker.
He also was the fourth overall top professional racer based on his best two class and points results. He won eight finals this season.
Colton Sturm, a rookie, finished third in the Pro 600 class and fourth in the Pro 700 class. Overall, he finished as the sixth top professional racer.
Steve Sherwood finished second in the Plus 40 class.
