MANKATO - Brainerd High School graduate Andy Pickar received the Minnesota State University Male Athletics Medal of Honor on Sunday.
Pickar, co-captain of the Mavericks' wrestling team, went 23-3 his senior season, which culminated with an 18-match win streak on his way to the national championship at 165 pounds. He helped the Mavericks to a second-place finish at the NCAA national championships.
He was a two-time NCAA national finalist, three-time All-American and three-time North Central Conference champion. He was named the 2006 North Region Outstanding Wrestler and had a 74-14 career record.
Andy Pickar is a Brainerd High School graduate.
Pickar wrestled at North Dakota State as a freshman and sophomore and redshirted his first year at Mankato.
At BHS, he compiled a 149-25 mark and qualified for state five times. He was a two-time state champion and state runner-up his sophomore year. Pickar won three section titles and twice was the Warriors' MVP. In his high school career Pickar had 57 pins and was 37-1 his senior season. He holds school records for most victories and most team points.
