St. Cloud State University sophomore Kayla Lenz, a Pequot Lakes High School graduate, captured first place at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference individual women's tennis tournament last weekend at the Baseline Tennis Club in Minneapolis.
Lenz won the title match at fourth singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Upper Iowa's Courtney Romer. At third doubles, Lenz and partner Tanya Halloran posted an 8-0 win over Augustana's Danielle Gilbert and Emily Johnson in the championship match.
Lenz has a 31-6 record this year in singles. In doubles she has a 23-12 mark. The Huskies are 26-8 and recently won the NSIC team championship.
Jacquelyn (Peterson) Doll, a Staples-Motley graduate, placed third at first doubles and third at No. 1 singles in the NSIC meet. She owns a singles record of 22-12 and a doubles mark of 23-12.
SCSU has qualified for the NCAA Division II tournament, which marks the first time since 2005 that SCSU has advanced to the tournament.
The Huskies will host the NCAA Division II Central Regional Friday and Saturday at the Sartell High School Tennis Complex. SCSU is seeded No. 1 in the regional and will play the winner of the first-round match between Minnesota State Mankato and Montana State-Billings. The winner advances to the NCAA Division II finals May 13-16 at Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Larson scores in pole vault
Freshman Jodi Larson of Baxter scored points for the Wisconsin-Stout women's track and field team on the first day of the WIAC outdoor championships Friday at UW-Oshkosh.
Larson placed seventh in the pole vault at 10-8.75 to earn her first conference points.
JV doubles teams win
The Brainerd Warriors won three doubles matches against Sartell in junior varsity tennis Monday.
Lewis Grabowski-Charlie Drummond, Austin Anderson-Adam Dirks and Ryan Goos-Joey Houston won their matches.
Pillager JV track wins
The Pillager Huskies junior varsity boys' track and field team won the Park Region Conference championship Monday.
The Pillager girls' team finished second.
Corrections/clarifications
It was incorrectly reported in Monday's Brainerd Warriors baseball story that Joel Martin had pitched a two-hitter in a 6-2 victory over the Moorhead Spuds Saturday.
Martin pitched a seven-hitter.
Also, it was incorrectly reported in Monday's North Central Speedway story that Jack Peterson rolled his Street Stock car in Saturday's feature.
Kris Macko was the driver who rolled his car.
