ST. PAUL - The Brainerd Warrior boys' team captured its first championship in the 20-year history of the Hamline Relays track and field meet Saturday.
Brainerd accumulated 133 points, beating runner-up Wayzata by 18 points.
"We had excellent performances in all events," Warrior boys' head coach Rod Reuer said. "It was a great team effort as we are beginning our championship meet run.
"We beat some perennial state track powerhouses, such as defending state champion Mounds View, Wayzata, Minnetonka and Roseville. Our team is focused and ready to challenge for the Section 8-3A True Team title Tuesday at Willmar."
Tom Lyscio won the shot put and discus for the Warriors. Thomas Ruttger, in the 1600 run, was Brainerd's other individual winner.
Brainerd won the distance medley and 1600 sprint medley relays. The distance medley team consisted of Ruttger, Mitch Lorenz, Tyler Rose and Luke Delaney. Teaming up in the sprint medley were Tom Thurstin, Korey Peterson, Taylor Strange and Rose.
Honor roll performances (top 15 in school history) were by T.J. Struss in the 100 dash and long jump; Dan Lauer in the 200 dash; Ruttger, Lorenz, Rose and Delaney in the distance medley relay; and Ryan Barnes in the 110 high hurdles and high jump.
Barnes' second-place 6-5 high jump tied his school record. Struss was runner-up in the long jump at 20-7.
