20 years ago (1988)

Elaine Johnson of Brainerd has cooked her way into the finals of the 1988 Minnesota Beef Cook-Off with her recipe for Aloha Beef. There were 200 entries and 10 finalists.

30 years ago (1978)

A class of Red Cross Candy Stripers was capped in special ceremonies held at the Bethany Good Samaritan Center. The girls earned their caps after completing 20 hours of volunteer service at the hospital and Bethany. Receiving the highest award, for 500 hours of service, was Anita Caughey.

40 years ago (1968)

The Garfield School was host recently to a mother-daughter Campfire dinner. The Blue Bird and Campfire Girls from the Whittier School were guests.

60 years ago (1948)

The Freedom Train, loaded with important American documents, will arrive in Brainerd at 4 a.m. Friday, May 7.

80 years ago (1928)

Spring must be here permanently for Russell Nelson and Melford Kurz found enough dandelions on the city hall lawn to make a bouquet this morning.

100 years ago (1908)

Mrs. Con OBrien and Mrs. P.F. OBrien will hold a 15 cent coffee at the home of the of the former tomorrow from 4-8 p.m. The proceeds are for the benefit of the new parochial school.
