Martin, Warriors shut down Spuds

Joel Martin pitched a two-hitter as the Brainerd Warriors defeated the Moorhead Spuds 6-2 in a Section 8-3A game Saturday at Adamson Field.

In seven innings Martin allowed two earned runs and seven hits. He struck out five, walked none and hit one. He faced 29 hitters, 24 of whom he started with a first-pitch strike.

Leading the Warriors at the plate were Cody Stange, who was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored until having to leave the game in the fifth with a separated shoulder.

Kyle Crocker was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two stolen bases. Travis Whirley was 1-for-2 with a run and sacrifice bunt. Reid Mimmack was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Tate Rusk went 1-for-2 with a run, RBI and walk. Desmond Janousek was 1-for-2 with a run and was hit by a pitch.

In a four-run Brainerd second, Stange doubled, Martin walked, Whirley had a sacrifice bunt and Mimmack delivered a two-run single. Singles by Janousek and Crocker scored Mimmack and Janousek.

The Warriors added two runs in the fourth on a single by Whirley and an RBI single by Rusk. Janousek was hit by a pitch and Crocker's fielder's choice scored Rusk.
