CASS LAKE -- Bill Oaks, Cass Lake Boys and Girls Club director, reported Tuesday the youth recreational and educational center has been open in that city since Jan. 4.
The center is open to youths from any town, he said, though most members are from the Cass Lake area.
Currently there are 170 memberships, with 90 percent being fourth- through sixth-grade students. Most come to the center every week, Oaks said.
Students can become club members by paying $5 or by donating their services to people.
He said the focus, besides providing recreation for students and a sense of belonging, is to encourage them to become responsible citizens and to develop self esteem.
Oaks reported juvenile crime in Cass Lake appears to have declined since the center opened.
