Work continues on downtown project

Posted: Saturday, May 02, 2009

The Downtown Brainerd street/utility reconstruction project, which started April 20, is continuing. The work involves replacing sanitary sewer, extending the storm sewer and making watermain repairs as needed. The work on the streetscape will include sidewalk pavers, benches, trees, bike racks, information kiosks, trash containers and larger sidewalk bumpouts. Other changes include two-way traffic on Front Street.

The contractor, Tom's Backhoe Service, will host weekly meetings updating business owners, property owners, and the public about what to expect in the coming week.

Businesses are encouraging customers, visitors to the area, and the curious public to visit downtown during construction. Participating businesses weekly willbe giving away $138 (one dollar for each year of Downtown's age) in Downtown Dough starting at the beginning of construction.

People may register to win at any participating businesses during construction. No purchase is necessary, however entries are thrown out Thursdays after each weekly drawing, so people are encouraged to register every week. Winners can use Downtown Dough as gift certificates at participating businesses: The Bead Box; Bob & Fran's Factory Direct, Inc.; Chocolate Etc.; Downtown Art & Frame Co.; E.L. Menk Jewelers; SIMPLE elegance (once it opens); Totally Kidz Shop; and Yesterday's Gone.

The reconstruction project is expected to be substantially completed July 31, including striping the streets; weather and other factors can and often delays project schedules.

The Brainerd Main Street Program is a community-based effort to revitalize Brainerd's Central Business District.
