Brainerd Economic Planner Phil Swanson submitted a letter of resignation to the Brainerd City Council, stating Mayor Bob Olson has asked him to do so. Olson said it was due to Swanson's actions regarding the BITC loan defaults.
30 years ago (1979)
Last fall, Larry Lopp of the Paul Bunyan Amusement Center thought a facelift was in order for the 30th anniversary of the huge Paul Bunyan statue. The new head, all 1,374 pounds, is more animated and lifelike.
40 years ago (1969)
Sixteen concrete flower urns, two feet in height, were installed in downtown Brainerd through efforts of the Brainerd Flower Society. Annual flowers will be planted in them by society members.
60 years ago (1949)
Several hundred were in attendance at the annual meeting of Paul Bunyan Vacationland, Inc. at Club LaGuyal. Twenty-four directors were elected, with president Alex Ruttger presiding.
80 years ago (1929)
In the first traffic law drive of the season, 18 Brainerd car owners, mostly businessmen, faced Judge Warner in municipal court. They were charged with parking their cars over the one-hour limit in the downtown business district.
100 years ago (1909)
Interest in roller skating seems to be renewing lately. The Casino Roller Rink was crowded Saturday night, over 100 skaters being on the floor and enjoying the sport.
