Central Lakes College's 2005 spring commencement ceremonies for more than 600 eligible students will be May 11 in Staples and May 12 in Brainerd.
Commencement speaker for the 7 p.m. May 11 program in the Staples-Motley High School gym will be Mayor Bruce Nelsen of Staples.
The commencement address for the 7 p.m. May 12 festivities in the Brainerd High School gym will be by Lew Moran, a member of the board of trustees for the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.
Bruce Nelsen will be Staples speaker.
Student Senate presidents Arin Lovelace in Staples and Amber Sliver in Brainerd will give the student welcome at their respective ceremonies.
Degrees to be conferred include the associate in arts, associate in applied science, and associate in science, along with diplomas and certificates. Graduates with high honors and honors will be recognized as they are presented to President Joe Birmingham.
Nelsen, a former assistant director at the Staples campus, is also an alumnus and former instructor. He taught in the machine trades program and served eight years as a legislator in the Minnesota House of Representatives.
Before retiring in 1995, Nelsen supervised the college Indian programs on the Mille Lacs, Leech Lake, Net Lake, Bois Forte and Grand Portage reservations. He was elected mayor in 2003.
Moran, of Minneapolis, is a principal with Hammel, Green & Abrahamson, a multi-state architectural and engineering firm.
Lew Moran will speak in Brainerd.
He received his bachelor of arts degree and a master of architecture degree from the University of Minnesota. He specializes in the planning, programming and design of collegiate and university facilities.
In addition to his responsibilities on the board of trustees, Moran has been active with other public and non-profit organizations. He is a trustee and board chair of Sobriety High School, one of Minnesota's charter schools.
A reception at the Staples campus will follow the Staples ceremony, while a reception in the high school cafeteria will follow the Brainerd event.
