The bridge over the Gull River near the Sylvan Dam is a popular fishing spot. It's also a favorite boat channel. A chain link fence was erected on the bridge to keep anglers from hooking boaters, but the move has caused a sharp controversy.

The Brainerd Water and Light Board has approved an agreement to connect Brainerd and Baxter's sanitary sewer systems and for joint use of the new wastewater facility. Both city councils must now approve the agreement.

The Good Samaritan Society, with a current nursing home at Eighth and Kingwood Streets, will build a new 90-bed facility on South Seventh Street behind the Holiday Inn.

Fire smoldering in a sawdust pile near Gilbert Lake fanned into flame Friday and burned over 10 acres of ground. For a time it threatened the Fred Pikula home.
80 years ago (1929)
Additional rooms to be equipped with a bath are being constructed at Pine Harbor Inn on Gull Lake. Proprietors Mr. and Ms. Gus Almquist are expending $2,000 to improve their six cottages on 102 acres.
100 years ago (1909)
The oldest inhabitants of Brainerd acknowledge that this week's snow storm is unprecedented in the history of the county, with some 30 inches falling. It is the heaviest late season storm since the white man came to these parts.
