AITKIN -- Michael "Mike" Zilverberg, age 86, of Aitkin, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin.
Mike was born in Alberta, Canada, on Aug. 27, 1917, the son of James and Caroline (Noach) Zilverberg. He moved with his family to South Dakota at the age of seven and attended schools there. He moved with his family to Aitkin when he was 16 and attended the Aitkin schools. He then worked for a time before entering the U.S. Army and served from 1942-1946. Upon his discharge he returned to the Aitkin area and had worked for Aitkin Motor Co., First National Bank of Aitkin and sold real estate from 1972-1985. He also worked as district court bailiff for nine years. He served the community in various capacities, some of which were Aitkin City Councilman for four years, mayor of Aitkin for six years, Aitkin County Commissioner from 1972 to 1982 and numerous boards and organizations. He was one of the original founding board members of the Northland Foundation.
He is survived by his wife, Jeannette Zilverberg of almost 54 years; two brothers, James Zilverberg of Grants Pass, Ore., and Jake Zilverberg of Aitkin; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Dave, and a sister Bessie.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at 11 a.m. from First Lutheran Church in Aitkin with the Rev. Lance Isaacson officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Aitkin. Military honors will be provided by the Aitkin VFW and American Legion Post. Visitation will be Monday from 4-8 p.m. with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. at the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home Home. Arrangements are with the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin.
