MOTLEY -- George Carlson Jr., 74, Motley, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Greater Staples Hospital.
He was born Dec. 5, 1927, in Estherville, Iowa, to George and Clara (Lucas) Carlson. He moved with his family to the Leader area in 1934. He entered the Navy in 1944 and served aboard the USS Eisner during World War II. After his discharge in 1946 he returned to the Staples area. He married Delores Smith on April 14, 1953, in St. Paul. He worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad, the city of Staples Water and Light Department for many years and the Motley School as a janitor for 10 years. He also was an antique dealer for many years. He was a member of the Motley American Legion and a life member of the Staples VFW.
Survivors include his wife; eight sons, Timothy, Thomas, Terrence, Randy, Robin, Roger, George and Tad Carlson; two daughters, Debra Converse and DeAnna Ihme; 31 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Dale, Dennis, Joseph and James Carlson; and three sisters, Rose Marie Pietz, Marion Mertens and Carol Mertens.
His parents and two grandchildren died earlier.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Riverside Christian Center in Motley with Pastor Jim Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Motley Public Cemetery.
