Oberstar to receive honorary degree
U.S. Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., will receive honorary degrees at the University of St. Thomas spring commencement exercises May 18.
Oberstar is a 1956 alumnus of St. Thomas. In 1998, he received the university's Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Sixth-, seventh-grade dance set Friday at YMCA
The Brainerd Family YMCA will host a dance for all sixth- and seventh-graders Friday.
The YMCA will close at 6:30 p.m. to allow students to arrive for the dance, which will begin at 7 p.m. Music, dance, pop and snacks will be available.
Cost is $5 and will be collected at the door.
After-school event planned for fourth- and fifth-graders
A new after-school event has been created for Brainerd fourth- and fifth-graders. The Brainerd Community Education Youth Trax program is hosting B.A.R.F. nights, which stands for Be A Real Friend. The first B.A.R.F. night will be 3-6 p.m. May 17 at Mississippi Horizons in Brainerd.
Cost is $5.
B.A.R.F. is a place where younger youth can participate in older youth activities. Students will ride the bus from their school to Lincoln Elementary where they will be met by Brainerd School District AmeriCorps members and escorted to the event.
Registration forms are located at all elementary school offices, Youth Trax, Fun 'N' Friends sites and Brainerd Community Education.

Park board to meet Monday
The Brainerd Parks and Recreation Board will meet 3:30 p.m. Monday at city hall.
Oak Street being swept Friday
The Brainerd Street Department will be street sweeping from 4-8 a.m. Friday on Oak Street from South Sixth Street to Highway 25.
Parking will be prohibited during the street sweeping.
Vehicles parked on the street during this time will be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense.
Republicans from Crow Wing and Morrison counties met Tuesday at St. Mathias Community Center and unanimously endorsed Rep. Greg Blaine, R-Little Falls, as candidate for House District 12B and Paul Koering of Fort Ripley for Senate District 12.

LITTLE FALLS -- A special meeting of the Little Falls School Board will be 8 a.m. Thursday in the superintendent's office to canvas the special election results.
LF transportation committee to meet
LITTLE FALLS -- The Little Falls School Board's Transportation Committee will meet 10 a.m. Friday in the superintendent's office.
PUC to meet Thursday
The Brainerd Public Utilities Commission will meet 10 a.m. Thursday at its office, 1151 Highland Scenic Drive, to discuss the city's request to use utility funds to finance public service building improvements.
Poppy Day set for May 10
Carl Sydney Hanson Unit No. 255 of the American Legion Auxiliary in Brainerd will host Poppy Day May 10.
The red poppies are handmade by disabled American veterans at the State Veterans Service Building in St. Paul. American Legion Auxiliary units statewide hold Poppy Day to honor veterans and to let them know they are not forgotten.
The poppy, the memorial flower of the Auxiliary, symbolizes the remembering and honoring of war dead. All proceeds from Poppy Day are used for the aid of the veterans and their families.
