The AARP Safe Driving Program, formerly known as 55 ALIVE, announced its class schedule for May and June in Cass and Crow Wing counties. The first time a participant must take a full 8-hour class. Then every three years the participant must take a 4-hour refresher class to maintain their insurance discount. The class is $12 for AARP members (must have membership card) and $14 for non AARP members per participant.

The AARP Safe Driving Program is a classroom driver refresher course conducted by AARP volunteers for people age 50 and older.

Ward named to committee
Rep. John Ward, DFL-Brainerd, was appointed to serve on the K-12 Education Finance Conference Committee which will meet this week to iron out differences between the House and Senate K-12 education bills.
Speaker of the House Margaret Anderson Kelliher said Ward has demonstrated strong leadership and understanding of the challenges facing Minnesota's schools and will be an advocate for students as he negotiates the final bill.
Festival fundraiser planned
MERRIFIELD - St. Francis of the Lakes Catholic School in Brainerd will host its Cinco de Mayo Festival fundraiser event at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Timbermist in Merrifield. The fun includes dancing demonstrations, dance lessons, diamond giveaways, light refreshments, DJ, live music, cash bar, silent auction and more.
Event tickets are $25 in advance ($30 at door) and are available at the Catholic parish office by calling 822-4040 or at the school at 817 Juniper St.
Students are selling raffle tickets. There are $20 raffle tickets to win the grand prize of $10,000 or six chances to win $500. There are $5 raffle tickets to win several $100 prizes and other prizes such as free pizza or milk each week for a year, a $500 grocery shopping spree, a diamond ring, camcorder, jewelry, valuable services and lots of fun items.

Salsa rumba classes slated
The Brainerd Family YMCA is now offering salsa rumba aerobics classes. No previous dance experience necessary. The class will be 6:40-7:25 p.m. Tuesdays and will run for four weeks beginning May 5 through May 26.
