MINNEAPOLIS -- U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone said Thursday he still believes a priest from Minnesota was murdered in Kenya, and questions an FBI report that concluded the Rev. John Kaiser committed suicide.
Wellstone met with FBI representatives for more than an hour in Washington on Thursday to discuss an 81-page report prepared by the FBI on its investigation into the death of the Roman Catholic priest from Perham.
"I think he was murdered," the Minnesota Democrat told reporters in a conference call afterward. "That's my own view."
Kaiser, 67, was found dead in a ditch along a busy highway outside Nairobi on Aug. 24. He was an outspoken critic of the Kenyan government and the human rights situation in the east African country, and had received death threats.
The FBI report, released last week, said Kaiser's death was "more consistent with a suicide than a homicide, and that this suicide resulted with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head." The report also said Kaiser had a history of manic depression. The FBI said it reached its conclusions after eight months of investigation, 200 interviews and four trips to Kenya by FBI agents.
