Mighty Gulls sign two players

The Brainerd Mighty Gulls have announced the signing of Sean Peichert of Creighton University and Josh Welborn of the University of Northern Alabama for the 2001 Northwoods League baseball season.

Peickert, a sophomore shortstop from Roseville, has played in 33 games, batting .306 with eight doubles, three triples, two home runs and 19 RBI. In high school he batted .480 with 14 home runs and 40 RBI in his senior season and was a two time all-state selection.

Welborn, a sophomore pitcher from Haleyville, Ala., has two wins and one save with a 5.17 ERA and has only eight walks in 31.1 innings. He played high school ball at Haleyville where he was named to the academic all-state team in his junior and senior years.

Free learn to swim program offered

The District 181 Community Education department and the Brainerd Family YMCA are again offering the free learn to swim program to local elementary students.

Boys and girls in grades 2-6 (next fall) with little or no swimming skills can learn basic water safety and swimming skills. The class runs from June 4 through June 8, and is available at both the YMCA and Brainerd High School pools.

Registration opens April 30. There is no charge. To register, call the YMCA at 829-4767.

Martin to speak

to boosters

Brainerd Warriors girls' golf coach Jean Martin will be the speaker at the Brainerd Sports Boosters Club meeting, which begins noon Thursday on the second floor at Central Lakes College.

Golfer Lisa Renneke, the Warrior Athlete of the Week, will be honored.
