'This is one of the homes I've done that sticks out'

A farmhouse built in the 1940s used to sit on 40 acres of land in the Brainerd lakes area.

The 1,500-square-foot farmhouse was in good condition, but the homeowners were expanding their family and needed more space. The couple, who wished to remain anonymous, said the homestead would have cost too much to remodel, so they sold it and the house was moved off the property.

Now standing in place of the farmhouse is a beautiful 4,000-square-foot country home with a walk-out.

Darrell Compton of D.L. Compton Construction in Brainerd worked with the homeowners on the floor plan, which features an open main level with a great room, kitchen and dining area; and bedrooms housed on the end wings.

As you walk into the home, you are greeted by a grand, covered front porch with white pillars and fencing. The front porch is where the original farmhouse sat. The porch ceiling is done in beaded fir with two ceiling fans.

Compton, the general contractor who started construction of the home last summer, said the home is almost complete. Compton said landscaping still needs to be completed and the homeowners wanted to keep the lower level of the home unfinished.

"This was a fun house to work on," Compton said. "The homeowners were great to work with. There were a lot of neat things they wanted that I got to create in the home. This is one the homes I've done that sticks out.

"The weather was challenging because we had a super cold winter and then the heavy rainfalls, but we got the roof done right on time."

A spacious arched entryway brings you into the great room. The back wall of the great room features all windows for a spectacular view of the wooded backyard.

A cultured stone fireplace, with custom-made cabinets alongside, brings a cozy atmosphere to the great room. The floors are rustic maple and the ceiling is rustic cherry.

The two bathrooms on the main level are done in ceramic tiles. The mud room off the attached three-stall garage features popular wooden cubbies that offer individual storage spaces and hooks for coats and shoes.

The lower level of the home includes a family room with a wood-burning fireplace, a kitchenette and a bedroom.

Compton said there is in-floor heating on the lower level and geothermal heating for the entire home.
