Blustery spring days don't seem to bother Amy Kittelson and other members of the Brainerd Warriors girls' track and field team.
Capitalizing on the wind to boost her distance, Kittelson uncorked a throw of 120 feet, 5 inches, to win the discus, the second-farthest effort in the 19 years girls' school records have been kept. She is less than 8 feet away from the school record of 128-3 set by Nancy Fleischhacker in 1984.
"The weather was perfect," Kittelson said. "The wind was just how you wanted it, coming in at you. I popped one on the first one. I caught the wind just right and rode it.
"Actually, I was kind of surprised. It didn't feel like it was going to be a personal best, but I ended up being 5 feet farther than my old record (115)."
Kittelson finished behind teammate Ashley Rodriguez in the shot put with a heave of 30-11 1/2. Rodriguez won at 35-1 3/4 and teammate Maria Swanson was third.
"It didn't go that well," Kittelson said of her shot put, "but Brainerd girls' throwers have been really strong so far this year. We went 1-2-3 in the shot.
"It's nice to have people right here, competing with your own team, pushing each other and motivating each other."
Brainerd won three relays and four different individuals won events as the Warriors paced the meet with 274 points.
"I was impressed with the team depth that we have," Brainerd girls' head coach Geri Skogen said. "It makes a difference in dual meets and triangular meets when you have numbers per event."
Additional honor roll efforts were by Claire Northway in the 100 hurdles (17.58), Ali Parsons in the 800 run (2:37.81) and Erin Holznagel in the 800 (2:38.44).
