Good Samaritan Bowl VI scheduled for May 4

Good Samaritan Bowl VI takes place May 4 at Jack's House in Brainerd and Community Bowl in Pine River. Hundreds of bowlers are raising pledges to benefit area Good Samaritan Society care centers and hospice.

To accommodate more bowlers, more bowling shifts have been added. Jack's House in Brainerd is offering bowling on May 3 plus an early bird shift at 10 a.m. and night owl shift at 9 p.m. on May 4. Bowlers may register online at www.goodsambowl.com or call 825-2505.

Proceeds from this year's bowling event, always the first Monday in May, will be used for blanket warming cabinets, resident room and commons area remodeling and hospice support programs for pediatric care.

Brainerd council to meet Monday

The Brainerd City Council scheduled a special meeting at 8 a.m. Monday at Brainerd City Hall to reconsider it high priority projects grant application.

Arthritis Walk planned

The Arthritis Foundation North Central Chapter will host its Arthritis Walk, a one-day walk May 16 to help fight arthritis. The chapter is seeking participants to take part in the fight against arthritis. Participants can register online at http://northcentral.arthritis.org or at the event. Participants that raise $100 will receive a free T-shirt.

The walk will be on the Paul Bunyan Trail beginning at the Baxter Trailhead. Participants can choose between a one-mile or three-mile route. The walk is fully supported and features snacks, water and entertainment. Those not interested in walking are urged to volunteer on the day of the walk. Call (800) 333-1380 for more information.

Melanoma Monday set for May 4

May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month and to raise awareness of melanoma and skin cancer, the American Academy of Dermatology has designated May 4 as Melanoma Monday.

Dr. Paul Lundstrom and Nicole Manecke will host a free skin cancer screening clinic for the public.

A free screening will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 4 at Dermatology Professionals in conjunction with the Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month.

Dermatology Professionals is in the Riverstone Professional Centre at 13359 Isle Dr., Suite 2, in Baxter. The screenings will take less than 10 minutes and could save lives.

Foundation awards $5,000 to CLC

The Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation recently approved a $5,000 grant to support the Central Lakes College Foundation's Random Acts of Kindness program.

The program was created in 2005 to provide emergency financial aid to Central Lakes College students at risk of dropping out of school because of financial emergencies. Since its inception, the program has assisted about 250 students. This scholarship is need-based only.
