Ashley Schmolke had never run 1600 meters in a competitive race.
Following her victory at 5:35.9 in a triangular against St. Cloud Tech and Apollo the Brainerd Warriors junior may be running it again. Her time placed her on the school's honor roll (top 15 in school history since 1984).
Schmolke said when distance coach Carl Schirmer informed her at practice Monday that she was running the 1600 she became nervous.
"I'm used to shorter distances," she said. "Coach said just get out there and try to get about six minutes. That was my goal. My strategy was to follow our other Brainerd girl (Audree Goodew) and have her carry me the whole way. Then, on about the fourth lap, I felt like I had a lot left in me. I ended up getting 5:34, which is better than I expected.
"I don't particularly like running distances but it was a good experience."
Schmolke also cranked out an honor roll time (2:29.6) on her way to victory in the 800 run.
"There wasn't a lot of room between the 1600 and 800 so I was a little tired," she said. "I just started out as fast as I could. I wanted to take the lead right away and push it the whole time. After the mile I knew I could do it."
Warriors coach Geri Skogen said Schmolke increases her ability to run longer distances as she gets older.
"She has speed endurance," Skogen said. "Not only can she run for the duration of a distance event. She also has the God-given talent of speed. Her distance base, along with a combination of speed, is making her a great sprint, middle and distance runner."
Maria Swanson also won two events for the Warriors, who won the triangular with 296 points. Swanson won the shot put with an honor roll distance (37-5 1/4) and also won the discus (94-5).
"It's been fun to watch Maria," Skogen said. "She keeps throwing farther in every meet. Her technique is improving, along with her strength, so that allows her to have success."
Additional honor roll efforts were by AshLeigh Hakes and Carissa Schmidt in the 3200 and Lauren Deyo in pole vault.
