DULUTH (AP) -- The first vessel in three weeks left from the Duluth entry after U.S. Coast Guard icebreakers successfully cleared the ship canal.
The 1,000-foot Walter J. McCarthy Jr. crossed under the Aerial Lift Bridge at 5:58 p.m. Monday. The last time the span was raised was April 1.
The icebreakers Morro Bay and Mackinaw had worked to break apart packed ice, which was up to 7 feet deep after three days of high winds blew hunks of ice into Lake Superior's western edge.
The closed entry and ice pack had dramatically slowed up an already late-arriving shipping season. The Superior entry, however, remained open.
