He was born to Ellsworth (Red) and Eva (Kraklau) Young on Oct. 27, 1946, in Brainerd.

Over the years Jerry was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 255 of Brainerd; a member of the Post 255 Color Guard; Wagon Master of the Rollin Rangers RV Club; chairman of the Legionville Camp-O-Ree; and a member of the Catholic church.
Thirty-five years ago Jerry was blessed with the gift of life after successfully beating the odds and surviving his first diagnosis of cancer. This helped shape Jerry's life of integrity and hard work. He never missed an opportunity to set an example or teach others, especially with his sons and grandchildren. He was taught 50 years ago as a Boy Scout to "leave it better than he found it" and that is what he did. He left a legacy in his family: his two sons that he was so very proud of, his five beautiful grandchildren and the love of his life, Becky. Jerry asked that we not grieve him, but celebrate our time together. He left us all with hearts full of memories and he will be sadly missed.
Jerry will be lovingly missed by his wife, Becky; his two sons, Darin (Karen) Young and Glen (Kitty) Young; grandchildren, Caitlin, Nathan, Cameron, Griffin and Ella; mother, Eva Young; brothers, Scott (Shirley) Young, of Nisswa, Barney (Judy) Young, of Aitkin, Will (Karleen) Young, of Brainerd; sister, Marie (Randy) Nelson, of Shoreview; many nieces and nephews; and blessed with friends both far and near, including many fellow "snowbirds" in Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ellsworth Young, and brother, Robert Young.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 23, 2009, at St. Francis Catholic Church with Deacon Roger Marks officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation times are Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to services at the church. Military honors provided by the Brainerd American Legion Post No. 255.
