ONAMIA - A celebration of Ojibwe culture is planned for 6-8:30 p.m. Friday at the Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post in Onamia.
Spend an evening immersed in Ojibwe art and culture. This family friendly event will feature the opportunity to decorate your own Ojibwe shoulder bag and learn more about Ojibwe language and culture from authors Anton Treuer and Thomas Peacock.
Participants will be provided with a blank shoulder bag to embellish from the Ojibwe Shoulder Bag Activity Kit inspired by Ojibwe bandolier bags and created by the Minnesota Historical Society and the Mille Lacs Indian Museum. The kit is available to educators for students in classrooms, youth programs and summer camps. The bag's printed design matches that of a contemporary bag created by Cheryl Minnema, a master beadworker from the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, who will be in attendance to share some of her artwork.
Treuer is the author of "Ojibwe in Minnesota" and Peacock is the author of "The Good Path: Ojibwe Learning and Activity Book for Kids," "The Four Hills of Life: Ojibwe Wisdom" and "Ojibwe Waasa Inaabidaa: We Look in All Directions." Both authors will talk about their experience teaching, preserving and celebrating Ojibwe culture and sign copies of their books, which will be available for purchase at the event.
