GRAND RAPIDS - Alyce Arethia Mohawk, age 93, of Grand Rapids, Minn., went home to be with her Lord Jesus on Sunday, April 15, 2007, at Sugar Brook Villa in Cohasset, Minn.
Alyce was born on Aug. 2, 1913, to Richard Almon Whitman and Lilly Mae (Britton) Whitman in Brainerd, Minn. She went to live with her aunt Alice (Britton) and uncle Henry Kyallquist after her mother's death in 1918. They later adopted her. Alyce graduated from Brainerd High School in 1930. During her life time she often worked outside the home, doing various jobs: secretarial, waiting tables, cooking, practical nurse, cleaning and had a home bakery in Longville for a time with her sister, Violet Hausken. Alyce was united in marriage to Lewis Earl Mohawk on Aug. 24, 1932, in Alexandria, Minn. They were married almost 68 years at the time of his death, April 1, 2000. To this couple was born six children. Alyce had a very busy, active life, pursuing the things she loved, including her family, fishing and hunting, reading, knitting, crocheting, quilting, embroidery and crewel work. Sewing, cooking and baking and gardening and canning, picking berries, growing flowers, difficult crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, poetry, traveling, music and singing and her church were more of her enjoyed pastimes. She attended Longville Bible Chapel for years and was active there. She wrote a book about her life when she was 87 and gave copies to her children and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all those whose life she touched.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Lewis, in 2000; and two sons, Wilfred in 1980, and Ronald in 1988; three sisters, Violet Hausken, Dorothy Whitman and June Goedker; two brothers, Thomas and Richard Whitman; and a great-grandson, Rylan Saez.
Survived by two daughters, Arlita (Onni) Putikka and Janette Brower, both of Grand Rapids, Minn.; two sons, Lewis (Patricia) Mohawk, of Fort Peck, Mont., James (Lu Ellen) Mohawk, of Libby, Mont.; 22 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 28, 2007, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service at Longville Bible Chapel, Longville, Minn. The Rev. Mike Partch will be officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Longville, Minn.
