Minnesota Report
BRAINERD/NISSWA
North Long Lake is providing consistent crappie action in 10 feet of water. Flu-Flu's tipped with minnows or small leeches have worked best this week. Pelican Lake and Lake Hubert are producing crappies in shallower water as well. Look to Upper Gull, the channel by Bar Harbor, and Wilson Bay on Gull for crappies in two to four feet of water. Expect to find sunfish mixed in with the crappies on the shallow locations.
CASS LAKE
The ice went out over the weekend on Cass Lake, and the area's small lakes have been open for about one week. Panfish action has been slow to develop, but look to the shallows on Midge Lake and Kitchi Lake to be the first spots to produce crappies.
CROSBY
The spring panfish bite is just getting started with a handful of shallow bays and shorelines producing crappies and an occasional good-sized sunfish. Look to lakes such as Blind, Perry, Black Hoof, and Serpent for better numbers of fish in three to six feet of water.
CROSS LAKE
The ice went out last Saturday on the area's bigger lakes. Crappie anglers are catching fish in the shallow bays with small minnows and jigs. The evening hours have provided the best bite on Crosslake and Rush Lake.
HACKENSACK
The ice is out, but crappies have yet to move shallow. Traditionally, the northwest bay on Pleasant Lake, the north end bays on Birch Lake, and Lundstrom Bay on Ten Mile Lake are the first to produce fish.
LAKE MILLE LACS
As of Tuesday morning, the only ice left was on the north end of the lake. It was floating and deteriorating quickly. Small minnows and jigs are producing crappies in Izaty's Harbor, Isle Bay, and the Father Hennepin area. The bigger fish are being caught in less than five feet of water during the afternoon.
LEECH LAKE
The ice went out Monday, and panfish anglers are starting to look for crappies. Work the small lakes in this area first, then look to the shallow bays and harbors on Leech to start producing crappies, too.
McGREGOR
Sunfish and crappies are biting on Lake Minnewawa and Big Sandy Lake in 10 feet of water. Minnows have worked best, and you will find some eating-sized perch mixed in with the crappies. Many anglers have been busy in area creeks where nightcrawlers are producing numbers of suckers.
