Calling fire conditions "explosive," Mayor C. Elmer Anderson, today declared a fire emergency in the City of Brainerd. "Due to the extreme dry, explosive conditions that exist in our area, all outside fire activity is banned until further notice," Mayor Anderson said. This includes all types of charcoal burners and cooking equipment.
30 years ago (1970)
On May 4, 1902 cornerstone-laying ceremonies were held at St. Joseph's Hospital in Brainerd. Workmen demolishing the old section of the hospital preparatory to a $3 1/2 million expansion program, brought a metal box containing mementos of that occasion to light yesterday.
40 years ago (1960)
Since the new shops were built here in 1946, a total of 10,820 cars have been constructed giving regular work to hundreds of Brainerd residents. Employment at the Brainerd shops averaged 571 last year when the direct payroll here totaled $2,878,943.
60 years ago (1940)
Winning perfect ratings in ten of 12 events at the Fourth District contest held in St. Cloud, Washington High School Choral and Instrumental musical groups scored smashing triumphs to earn places in the State contest in Minneapolis May 2, 3 and 4.
