WILLMAR - Mitch Means shot par-72 to win medalist honors and the Brainerd Warrior boys' golf team won the Central Lakes Conference season opener Thursday at Eagle Creek.
Brainerd's Jared Hoppe finished third with a 75 and Curt Carlson's 79 placed him seventh. Tyler Monda's 82 rounded out Brainerd's top four.
"It was very windy," Warriors coach Brian Wallace said. "The conditions were not good but Mitch still came through even-par. It was an absolutely stellar round in those conditions. For the first time out in a conference meet, to be able to do that is pretty amazing.
"The team is excited because they are in first place in the conference. It's been a long time."
Means said the windy conditions didn't bother him.
Mitch Means shot par-72
"I had my putter rolling pretty well," Means said. "I started out hot. I had a couple birdies in a row, got under par and basically just tried to maintain that the whole round."
Thursday's meet followed Tuesday's showing at Detroit Lakes where the Warriors finished second by one shot on a par-64 course to the section runner-up Lakers.
"To finish second on one of (Detroit Lakes') home courses was really good," Wallace said. "To come that close to beating them on a course we had never played before was a pretty good showing."
