Eighth-graders in the Brainerd School District scored higher on the graduation standards tests than last year's students, school officials reported this morning.
This year, 83 percent of the eighth-graders passed the reading test compared with 79 percent last year. In the math test, 76 percent of the students passed or 1 percent more than last year's students.
Gary Phillips, Brainerd assistant superintendent, said he was pleased with the results and happy that the students continue to improve. Phillips said scores at other districts in the state stayed the same, while Brainerd's exceeded.
There were 581 students who took the test -- 431 from Franklin Junior High School and 143 at Mississippi Horizons.
Phillips said seniors who have not passed the test yet will have one more shot this year to pass before graduation. One senior has not passed the writing test while two have not passed the math test and four have not passed the reading test.
