PINE RIVER -- The Cass County Chapter of the American Cancer Society is finalizing plans for the 2000 Relay For Life to be held Aug. 4 and 5 at the Pine River athletic field.
A potluck supper for anyone interested will be May 1 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Backus, where the planning group and team captains will meet.
The Relay For Life is a unique way to celebrate life in honor and in memory of those whose lives have been touched by cancer. Teams come together to walk, run or jog around the track in relays through the night. The goal is to raise awareness and money through donations to help the fight against cancer.
More teams are needed to join in a night of entertainment, music, food, fun and prizes and a night of camping under the stars. The highlight of the event is the lighting of luminaries to honor survivors and to remember those who have lost their battle against cancer. These luminaries are left burning around the track throughout the night to remind participants of the importance of their contributions.
This is the second annual event. Funds are raised by selling luminaries for $5 in honor of survivors or in memory of cancer victims. There are also many firms or individuals who may wish to be sponsors. The funds raised are used for research, education and patient services. Several researchers funded in part by the American Cancer Society have won the Nobel prize in Medicine.
Anyone interested in forming a team, walking as a survivor, sponsoring a team, or any other information may call Lois or Pastor Don at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Backus 947-4182.
