WALKER -- The Cass County Board will tour a proposed garbage and recycling collection site south of Cass Lake at 5:30 p.m. May 2 before the board's 6 p.m. meeting at the Family Center in that city.
The county is in the process of negotiating a contract with Greg Anderson of Leech Lake Solid Waste to manage the site.
He told the board it is hoped having a collection site there will diminish the number of sites people have been dumping waste in the woods. Anderson estimated there are 200 such illegal sites now.
Located just south of Cass Lake and adjacent to Highway 371, the operation is proposed to accept recyclables and solid waste from individuals.
Garbage haulers from northern Cass will continue to haul their loads to the county transfer station north of Pine River, Environmental Services Director Paul Fairbanks said.
Non-Indians will purchase punch cards in Cass Lake to use at the new facility. Besides garbage, the site also will accept appliances, used motor oil and car batteries and household hazardous waste, Anderson said.
Leech Lake Reservation will continue to pay Cass County $1,700 per month for transporting to a landfill garbage generated on the reservation.
The county board voted to endorse a time extension for Wabedo Township near Longville to use low interest loan funds for cluster private sewer system projects in that township.
The township will channel the funds to neighborhoods installing community sewer systems to replace individual property septic systems.
The board agreed to permit a ground water monitoring well on the courthouse lawn only on the condition the agreement have a hold harmless clause for the county and that the well be installed level with the ground.
Fairbanks said he has selected Dawn Berg to fill a new permit intake position in his office. She will assist the public with filling out zoning permit applications.
Applicants are still being interviewed to fill two vacant zoning inspector positions, Fairbanks said. The board authorized him to offer beginning pay above Step 1 on the county pay scale if successful applicants have had experience in another county.
