NISSWA - Golf might be an individual sport, but the Staples-Motley Cardinals displayed the team side of it Friday.
Senior Julia Schock rebounded from Thursday's 92 during the first round of the Warrior/Patriot Invite to post an 83 Friday at The Pines.
Her play helped offset teammate Cydney Hasselberg's higher round Friday. Hasselberg led the field with Thursday's 78, but came back with an 85 Friday to drop to second individually.
Combined, however, the two seniors helped S-M to the team title.
"Yesterday I had 43 putts and today I had 35," said Schock. "I had a 92 yesterday so I would have shot pretty much the same thing yesterday if my putting was better.
"My drives were a little better today, too. I was kind of slicing pretty bad yesterday, but today they were nice and straight."

Schock was more focused Friday, especially after posting her higher than usual score. Her goal is to break into the 70s. After her 83, she's more confident she'll get there.
"I don't usually go this low this early in the season so it is good encouragement, I guess," said Schock. "I know I can do a lot better than I did today."
While things were going well for Schock, Hasselberg struggled Friday on the Marsh and Woods nines. She shot 41 on the Marsh and 44 on the Woods.
"I was hitting well yesterday, but my short game was struggling," said Hasselberg. "Today, everything was wrong. My timing was just off and I couldn't fix it. I just didn't give up, though. I tried real hard on every hole, but I just couldn't get it done."
Hasselberg's 85 was still second on the team. Kelly Hagenson shaved five strokes from Thursday's round to fire an 86. Hailey Roberts, who carded an 84 Thursday shot 94 Friday.
The Cardinals topped second-place Detroit Lakes by four strokes Friday and by 23 for the tournament.
Pequot Lakes, led by Megan Lenz's two-day 191 and Erika Schwalbe's 192 finished 10th. Wadena-Deer Creek saw Kayla Krause shoot rounds of 91-94 for a 185 leading the Wolverines to 13th.
"I was just hoping to break 100 because this is my first meet and everything," said Krause. "I'm pretty pleased with how I shot (Friday). I thought I was going to do worse because I had some bad holes on the Marsh, but 94 is good. I was thinking I would be getting in the higher 90s, but (my round) was pretty consistent."
The junior found herself one-putting often thanks to her chipping.
Her play and the improved play of her teammates allowed W-DC to jump up one spot from Thursday. W-DC shot 460 at The Preserve and a 444 at The Pines as all four of Krause's teammates shot lower scores Friday.
The Brainerd Warriors, without the services of junior Molly Hoppe, who had a school conflict, finished 14th. Brittany Kohlmeier's two-day 223 led the way. Morgan Twamley fired a 227.
"I just want to thank Grand View for letting us play on two great courses these past few days," said Warriors head coach Brian Stark. "They were both in great condition and everything went smoothly. We are kind of spoiled with all the great courses we get to play in our area."
Crosby-Ironton's Jamie Welle shot a 94 Friday for a two-day 199.
