Verndale falls in area softball

VERNDALE -- Despite a nine-run fifth inning, the Verndale Pirates fell to the Eagle Valley Rebels 16-13 in a non-conference softball game Monday night.

The Pirates tied the game 10-10 after their fifth-inning output, but the Rebels answered with six runs in the sixth to put the game away.

Marie Kern was 2-for-5 with three RBI for the Pirates. Cherice Fuller and Melissa Stave were both 2-for-4 with an RBI. Verndale is 0-3 overall and will play its first Park Region Conference game today at home against Pillager.

Holdingford 16, Pierz 3

PIERZ -- The Pierz Pioneers were defeated by the Holdingford Huskers 16-3 in a Central Minnesota Conference game Monday night.

The Huskers scored ten runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 16-1. The Pioneers scored two in the bottom of the fifth but the game was called do to the ten-run rule.

The Pioneers Sheena Loidolt and Alison Boser were both 2-for-3. Kayla Pohlkamp was 1-for-2 with a double and Shelly Boser finished 1-for-2 as the Pioneers are looking for their first win of the season falling to 0-3 in the conference and 0-4 overall.

Alexandria 12, Little Falls 0

LITTLE FALLS -- The Alexandria Cardinals grounded the Little Falls Flyers 12-0 Monday in a Central Lakes Conference softball game.

Jenney Tonsager, Laura Sperl, and Melissa Gustafson all went 1-for-2 at the plate for the Flyers.

Jessica Waltman suffered the loss for Little Falls as she pitched three innings and allowed two hits.

OGILVIE -- The Aitkin Gobblers were defeated by the Ogilvie Lions 7-1 in a Great River Conference game Monday.

The Gobblers had only five hits and committed three errors as they fell to 1-1 in the conference and 1-3 overall.
