Library offers genealogy help
Finding your family's history is a fascinating journey through history. The Brainerd Public Library has many resources to make that journey easier.

WASHINGTON - When Pamela Baldwin moved from the Washington area, she never thought she would have trouble finding a doctor who would accept her as a new Medicare patient.

It's a busy time at the senior center
Our official name is the Lakes Area Senior Activity Center. During the months of April and May we are heavy into activities. Along with our regular daily, weekly and monthly activities, we held our third annual Quilt Bingo on April 13; we served an Applebee's Flapjack Breakfast on April 19; May 8-10 will be our annual Plant Festival; and we also are having a Craft and Bake Sale on May 10.

Last call for seniors?
Although alcohol abuse is most often regarded as a problem affecting young people, a large federally funded study has now found that nearly one in 10 Americans older than 65 drinks too much.

Hackensack man launches new program
HACKENSACK - From working on the Apollo space program that sent Neil Armstrong to the moon in 1969 to working on a small model train town today, 86-year-old Duane Mitton of Hackensack has had an interesting life.

ATV driver arrested for fleeing near LF
LITTLE FALLS - A 20-year-old rural Bowlus man was arrested Monday south of Little Falls after fleeing from law enforcement on an all-terrain vehicle, the Morrison County Sheriff's Department reported.

Tax filers have 6 p.m. mail deadline
In past years, those filing their tax returns were able to mail their taxes by midnight at the Brainerd Post Office and still meet the April 15 postmark deadline.

Four named
The Brainerd School Board announced the names of the four finalists for Brainerd's next superintendent Monday, which includes two familiar faces.

APRIL 16 - 20 years ago (1988) - The Brainerd City Council approved an allocation not to exceed $30,000 for construction of a parking lot on River Road near the Brainerd High School baseball diamonds. The lot is to include space for about 100 vehicles.

Two teachers placed on unrequested leave regain status
Two of the five Brainerd teachers placed on unrequested leave were recalled at Monday's school board meeting, bringing the total number of teachers who will lose their jobs next school year to 60. Fifty-seven probationary teachers earlier were cut, due to budget reductions.

PILLAGER - For nearly 100 families in the Pillager School District, the food shelf in the Pillager Family Center provides an outlet of hope.

Mill Avenue bridge closed
The Mill Avenue bridge in northeast Brainerd was closed Monday as part of a Crow Wing County project to reconstruct Mill Avenue. Traffic is detoured to Wise Road off Crow Wing County Highway 3 and then back to Brainerd via the Beaver Dam Road and Riverside Drive. The bridge could be closed until late June. Broken arm
A railroad crossing arm malfunctioned Tuesday afternoon at Elder Drive near Home Depot in Baxter. Another crossing arm, one block east, at Highway 371 and south of Highway 210, also malfunctioned. Request for beer sales on 4th withdrawn
Nancy Cross, executive director of Brainerd Community Action, asked the Brainerd School Board Monday to withdraw her request for beer sales on school grounds at the annual Fourth of July celebration.
