RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- Zena J. Appledorn, 102, River Falls, Wis., died Sunday, April 7, 2002, at Kinnic Long-Term Care in River Falls.
She was born Nov. 13, 1899, in Little Rock, Iowa, to Johannes and Gesine (Leemhuis) Schulte. She attended Brookings, S.D., schools through eighth grade and graduated from Mankato Commercial College in 1923 with a degree in business. She married Conrad Appledorn on June 11, 1923, in Pipestone. They lived in the Crosby area with their family from 1939 until she moved to River Falls in 1991. She attended nursing school at St. Joseph's Hospital in Brainerd from 1957 to 1958 and worked at both St. Joseph's Hospital and Cedarbrook Manor in Deerwood until her retirement at age 75. She was well known for her volunteer work in Crow Wing County, Crosby and Brainerd. She had many years of service to the American Legion Auxiliary and the Disabled American Veterans. They were named DAV Family of the Year in 1932 for contributions to the association's projects. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Crosby (now in Deerwood) for many years.
Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Melby, Casa Grande, Ariz., and Sherrill Neudahl, River Falls; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband; three sons, Conrad, Arthur and John; five brothers, Harry, Christoffar, Herman, John and George; and three sisters, Nellie, Christine and Hilda, died earlier.
Services will be in June in Crosby. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery.
