PINE RIVER -- A 7-year-old Pine River Elementary School student died after collapsing at the school Monday morning.
Dylan James Stark, a first-grader, collapsed at 8:45 a.m. while doing warm-ups in physical education class, said Pine River-Backus Superintendent James Madsen. The class was outside near the playground.
Physical education teacher Donald Bahr began cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Dylan. The school nurse, two other staff members and a few high school students were at the scene for assistance.
Madsen said when the ambulance arrived the boy still had a pulse. He was transported by North Air Care to Duluth. Dylan lived with his mother, Nicole Snider, and stepfather, Gary, in Pine River. The family moved to Pine River in February from Missouri. Dylan has a third-grade brother, Levi Worley.
Madsen said Dylan had a prior medical heart condition. The school district has a doctor's order for Dylan on record that stated he could participate in physical education activities. If he felt out of breath he could take time out to rest, Madsen said.
Madsen said Dylan had rested during the class before Monday's tragedy. Madsen said he was never told what the cause of death was or the time of Dylan's death. Neither the Pine River Police Department nor the Cass County Sheriff's Department could confirm a time of death. Information from the Duluth hospital was unavailable this morning.
