Finding your family's history is a fascinating journey through history. The Brainerd Public Library has many resources to make that journey easier.
Foremost of our resources are two databases, HeritageQuest and Ancestry.com. HeritageQuest can be accessed at any computer with Internet access, from anywhere. It contains census information, books on local history, 1.7 million articles, Revolutionary War information and more. This should be your first stop in your genealogy search.
The second database, Ancestry.com, is an enormous database with over 4,000 databases with military, census, immigration and so much more. To use this database, you will need to be on one of the computers at the library.
HeritageQuest and Ancestry.com are available at the Kitchigami Regional Library website at www.krls.org under the heading "Online Resources." To access either resource a person needs a valid Kitchigami Regional Library card and a personal identification number.
For more information, contact the Brainerd library at 829-5574.
Other history sources include: Brainerd Dispatch newspaper on microfilm, 1883 to the present; Brainerd City Directory, 1900 to the present; Brainerd High School yearbooks, 1924 to the present; books on local history and genealogy; two genealogy magazines, "Family Tree Magazine" and "Everton's Genealogy Helper"; and Interlibrary Loan, where the library can obtain materials from all over the state including the Minnesota Historical Society Library.
As you can see, there are many resources for your use. Add in the extensive materials at the Crow Wing County Historical Society and the help and fellowship of the Crow Wing County Genealogical Society, and you have many resources to start or continue your family search.
Linda McIntosh is the reference supervisor at the Brainerd Public Library.
