Clifford M. Carey, 95, Brainerd, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at St. Joseph's Medical Center of Brainerd.
He was born Aug. 8, 1904, in King's Mountain, Ky., to Edward and Luanna (Singleton) Carey. He married Marion Ebaugh on Dec. 25, 1925, in Granville, Ohio. He did his undergraduate work at Denison University in Granville and Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Ill., where he received his bachelor's degree in 1930. He received his master's degree from Northwestern University of Evanston, Ill., in 1933 and earned his doctorate from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles in 1942. He was employed by the YMCA, serving various YMCA's in Illinois and California from 1926-1939. He was a member of the North Central Area staff from 1939-1943, when he joined the staff of the National Council of YMCA's, headquartered in New York, N.Y. He retired in 1970. He was elected to the YMCA's Hall of Fame in 1992 and received the Outstanding Alumni award from Denison University in 1957. He authored a book titled "A Carey Family History" in 1994, as well as numerous YMCA and genealogical articles. He was a member of Lakewood Evangelical Free Church of Baxter.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Richard Carey, Nisswa, and Donald Carey, Camarillo, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
A brother, Joseph, died earlier.
Services will be 11 a.m. May 13 at Lakewood Evangelical Free Church of Baxter with Pastor Dwight Johnson officiating. Memorials are preferred to the Brainerd YMCA, Lakewood Evangelical Free Church of Baxter, Woodland Good Samaritan Village of Brainerd or St. Joseph's Medical Center of Brainerd.
