Minnesota used six pitchers to hold Iowa State to just five hits en route to a 6-3 baseball victory Wednesday.
Winning pitcher Nathan Bennett (1-0) was one of four Gophers to pitch each of the final four innings to keep Iowa State hitless through the stretch.
Aaron Runk scored two runs while Brainerd's Jade O'Brien knocked in two runs to lead ISU (10-25).
The Gophers (20-13) came back from a 2-0 deficit with a five-run sixth inning. Minnesota capitalized on two Iowa State errors and three hits in the inning. Josh Holthaus' two-run single got the Gophers' offense going.
Forte resigns as Apollo hockey coach
After just one season as head coach of the St. Cloud Apollo boys' hockey team Pat Forte submitted his resignation Wednesday.
The former Brainerd High School boys' hockey coach told the St. Cloud Times he will remain a fifth-grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School in St. Cloud. He told the Times he resigned for "personal reasons."
The Eagles were ranked in the Class AA top 10 most of the season. Apollo shared the Central Lakes Conference title with Brainerd and finished 19-4 overall.
Forte was hired at Apollo after taking two seasons off from coaching in Brainerd. He had an 80-53-5 record in six seasons at Brainerd, coaching the Warriors to two Central Lakes Conference championships.
Area basketball players compete in series
Dustin Hjelmeland of Staples-Motley, Brianna Biebighauser of Pequot Lakes and Cyndi Kimman of Pierz competed in the Minnesota High School Basketball series last weekend.
Hjelmeland had 12 points and five rebounds in the Gold team's 97-84 loss to the Maroon at St. Cloud State. He had four points in Saturday's 98-94 win over the Blue team at Hopkins Lindbergh Center.
Biebighauser had 11 points as Class AA lost to Class A 74-62 at the University of St. Thomas. She had eight points and Kimman five in Saturday's 80-70 loss to Class 4A at St. Cloud Apollo.
