AITKIN - Lydia Emma Menzel, age 97, of Aitkin and formerly of Iron Hub, died on Thursday, April 9, 2009, at Aitkin Health Care Center in Aitkin.
She was born on Dec. 16, 1911, in Rabbit Lake Township, Minn., to Gustav and Bertha (Eschenbacher) Gruenhagen. She was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iron Hub. Se was a life long church member and a member of its Ladies Aid. As a young woman, Lydia worked for C.F. Haley in Duluth as a maid for two years. Lydia married Henry Emil Menzel on Nov. 1, 1933. They were blessed with four children. She was a long time cook for Roy's Cafe in Deerwood. In 1997, she moved from their farm to the Edgewood Apartments in Crosby, where she resided until 2007.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald (Sally) Menzel of Ramsey and Eugene (Adelyn) Menzel of Bloomington; one daughter Irma Novotny of Iron Hub; a sister, Betty Hart of Savage; nine grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry in 1983; three brothers, Edward, Clarence and Arnold Gruenhagen; three sisters, Ella Emch, Esther Uecker and Emma Freerks; one son Roger Menzel; son-in-law, Jack Novotny; and daughter-in-law Betty Menzel.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iron Hub. Burial will be at the at the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby from 3:30 to 6 p.m. and on Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the church.
