ST. CLOUD -- The defending Class 3A state champion Brainerd Warriors opened their baseball season with a 5-0 Central Lakes Conference loss to the St. Cloud Tech Tigers Tuesday night at Putz Field.
Brainerd managed just four hits off winning pitcher Ryan Morse, who struck out eight and walked three in five innings.
"We ran into a very good pitcher who was in midseason form," Warriors coach Lowell Scearcy said. "Last year we were able to get in three scrimmages before our first game. This year we certainly showed the effects of a lack of time outdoors."
The Warriors left 13 runners on base and committed four errors.
"As expected, we need to work on our defense," Scearcy said.
Nick Weiland was 2-for-3 with a double to lead Brainerd. Bob Brown and Joey Tautges also doubled for the Warriors.
Adam Hardy, Jason Goerges and Ben Winterfeld pitched for Brainerd. Hardy took the loss, walking two, striking out three, giving up six hits and four earned runs in three innings. All four runs against Hardy scored in the first inning.
