WALKER -- John Robert Reuter III, 51, Walker, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Cass County Court to fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Reuter, Cass County veterans service officer, appeared before Judge John P. Smith to answer allegations he touched a 16-year-old Pine River girl in a sexual manner in August 1999.
The incident reportedly occurred at the Pine River Family Center where Reuter conducted business weekly as the county veterans service officer.
The Cass County Sheriff's Department began an investigation in the summer of 2000 after the girl's father reported she had been receiving e-mail from Reuter, according to the complaint filed against Reuter.
A May 14 pretrial hearing has been scheduled. No date has been set for a trial at this time.
Reuter is on paid suspension from his job as veterans service officer, pending the outcome of an administrative investigation into whether he violated county personnel rules.
Tom Kuesel is defending Reuter in the criminal case. Beltrami County Attorney Tim Faver is acting as special prosecutor in the case to prevent any potential conflict of interest from Cass County Attorney Earl Maus.
