Month focuses on child abuse prevention

April has been designated as Child Abuse Prevention Month by the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse.

Three children die each day in this country because of abuse and over one million children are abused and neglected each year, according to the organization.

In the Brainerd lakes area, the Family Support Network, home of Parents Anonymous, provides a place for parents to help one another deal with the challenges of being a parent. The meetings are confidential and take place from 6-8 p.m. Mondays at the Campus Playhouse day care center next to Central Lakes College.

Tourism group to meet

The Minnesota Heartland Tourism Association will hold its spring meeting from 10 a.m. until noon Thursday at the AmericInn, located between Jenkins and Pequot Lakes on Highway 371 North.

The meeting topic will be "International Tourism Marketing: What's in it for me?" Presenter will be Cheryl Offerman, manager of destination sales for the Minnesota Office of Tourism. Also in attendance will be Jennifer Peterson of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, who will present information on the 2000 Northcentral/West fall travel directory.

Minnesota Heartland Tourism Association works in partnership with the Minnesota Office of Tourism to promote the 29-county Northcentral/West Tourism Region.

Baxter council to meet

BAXTER -- The Baxter City Council will reconvene at noon Thursday.

Agenda items include position recommendations for technical clerk, building official and water plant operator/maintenance worker; resolutions for bids for both the Parkwood project and the Glory Road 2000 project; and a review of current annexation petitions.

Outages expected for Horseshoe Lake area

Crow Wing Power will be working on power lines in the Horseshoe Lake area of Mission Township.

Customers can expect intermittent power outages.

Crow Wing Power anticipates completing the power line work by the end of this week.

CARE officers elected for 2000

Coordinating Area Resources Effectively is a networking organization in Crow Wing County with a 15-year history.

Officers elected to run CARE for the year 2000 are: Nancy Carkhoff, president; Rose Kramer, vice president; Pam Hagedon, secretary; and Nancy Hirschenberger, treasurer.

Committee contacts on the CARE board are Hagedon, education committee, and Julie Despot, Children Youth and Families. The group will meet at noon Tuesday in the University of Minnesota Extension Service county office.
