PIERZ -- Walter Stumpf, 84, Pierz, former resident of rural Lastrup, died Friday, April 7, 2000, at St. Mary's Villa in Pierz.
He was born Dec. 9, 1915, to Ed and Regina (Terhaar) Stumpf in Pierz Township. When he was 5, they moved to Agram Township where he farmed with his parents and worked for neighbors and uncles. He married Rita Dehler at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Buckman on Sept. 28, 1940. They farmed in Agram Township and in 1944 they moved to Granite Township where they dairy farmed until his retirement in 1978. At that time they moved to a hobby farm where he worked with draft horses and appeared in various parades and community sleigh rides. Later, they moved to an apartment in Pierz. In March, he became a resident of St. Mary's Villa in Pierz. He was a member of St. Isadore's Council of the Knights of Columbus, Farmers Union, Northern Minnesota Draft Horse Association and a trustee of St. John's Parish in Lastrup for 32 years. He was also a Granite Township supervisor for many years. He received the Diocesan Medal of Merit from Bishop Speltz on May 6, 1983.
Survivors include his wife, three sons, Roger, Joe and Art Stumpf, all of Lastrup; five daughters Arlene Boser, Lastrup, Betty Boser, Oakdale, Colette Stockler, Princeton, Lori Funk and Lue Gilmer, both of Buckman, and Geri Pohlkamp, Lastrup; four brothers Edwin Stumpf, Little Falls, Roman Stumpf, Le Seuer, Herb Stumpf, Pierz, and Ernie Stumpf, Belle Plaine; four sisters, Irene Selinski, Little Falls, Marie Schultheis, Uniontown, Wash, Cora Cain, Fort Collins, Colo., Lavina Bonacci, Lakewood, Colo.; 30 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
A brother, Alfred Stumpf, died earlier.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Nepomuk Church in Lastrup with Father Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. today at the Brenny Funeral Home in Pierz and from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Parish Prayers will be 7:30 p.m., Christian Mothers at 5:30 p.m. and Knights of Columbus Office of the Dead at 8:30 p.m.
