PEQUOT LAKES -- Leonard L. Kargel, 87, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at his home in Pequot Lakes. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 10, 2004, at the Church of the Nazarene, Brainerd, located four miles north on Highway 371. The Rev. Stan Lynch will officiate. Burial will be in the Pequot Lakes Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2004, at Willim-Northland Funeral in Pequot Lakes.
Leonard Lewis Kargel was born on June 16, 1916, in Clyde, N.D., the son of Charles R. and Lydia (Stein) Kargel. He married Velma Vanscoy on Oct. 30, 1937, in Brainerd. In 1938, they moved to Deerborn, Mich., where Leonard worked as an assistant superintendent for the Ford Motor Plant. In 1947, they moved to Pequot Lakes, where they owned and operated Kargel's Plumbing Appliance and TV. They also operated a self-service laundry and bottle gas delivery service. They sold the business in 1983. Leonard was a licensed lay minister for the Church of the Nazarene. He had also been active in the church as the Sunday school superintendent, teacher and board member for many years. Leonard was also a member of the Gideons. He enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, gardening, arborist and water-skiing.
Survivors include his wife, Velma, Pequot Lakes; children Wilretta (Clyde) Bloomer, Minneapolis, Larry (Carol), Lexington, Ky., Charles (Naida), Pine River, Myron (Nancy), Madison, Wis., Joann Walker (Bob Gauthier), Moorhead, Judy (Roger) Dwire, Pequot Lakes, Mark (Lynnette), Dallas, foster children Sharon Lowing and Heidi Hudell; 21 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; brothers Kenneth, Michigan, and Robert, Breezy Point. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Richard Wayne, and brother, Charles. Arrangements are with Willim-Northland Funeral Home in Pequot Lakes.
