FINE ARTS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

Megan Olson

Posted: Thursday, April 08, 2010

Year: Senior.

Age: 17.

Art focus: Art.

Adviser nomination: "Megan is an amazing young lady and a creative and enthusiastic artist. She always gives 110 percent and then asks 'What's next?' She has taken every class in the BHS visual arts department that is offered. Megan recently demonstrated that she has an extra talent in sign language. BHS recently held a beautiful memorial to Melissa Wooden, a former sign language instructor and student art teacher who was tragically killed in a car accident. Megan's work ethic, creativity, art aptitude along with her warm and caring personality make it an easy choice to award her Fine Arts Student of the Week."

Brainerd High School senior Megan Olson on Tuesday worked on her scrapbook in her art class.

Current art classes: Artist books and Introduction to Fundamental Visual Art.

Project you're working on: "In artist books we're doing scrapbooks that are all about ourselves. There are 30 pages that are about five (inches) by five (inches) in size. In my other art class we're doing collages of a self-portrait. I just finished mine and it includes all the things I enjoy, like stars, a pencil to symbolize my love of art and butterflies."

How does art make you feel: "It makes me feel relaxed and free."

Your favorite art medium and why: "Pottery because you can sculpt your own thing and it is in 3-D and visual. If I could take pottery again I would."

Do you give it your all in all you do: "No, not in everything I do. I don't give it my all in my other classes, I should but I don't. I'm going into cosmetology after high school, so I give it my all to that, and to fashion and in dance. In dance, I do lyrical, jazz and tap."

Artist most admired: "My art teachers and all art influences inspire me. I admire Salvador Dali as an artist."

Memorable fine arts achievement: Being names Fine Arts Student of the Week.

The first art project that you can remember: "I made a clay hand print in kindergarten. It is hanging in my house."

Dream job: "To be a hair stylist."

Favorite childhood cartoon: "Barney."

Favorite author: Judy Blume.

Best song of all-time: "I'll Be" by the Goo Goo Dolls.

Favorite restaurant: Poncho and Lefty's.

Parents: Cyndi and Jeff Olson of Merrifield.

Honorable mention: Casey Lindberg, junior, mock trial: Mock trial adviser said, "Mock Trial is the time-limited performance of a case, and Casey Lindberg was the timekeeper for the mock trial team. She did an excellent job of keeping us within our time limits. She also was the understudy for every part. With Casey's positive and warm personality, she was always one of the first to give fellow teammates praise when they did well and could be counted on to gently give constructive criticism."
