ONAMIA -- Richard Leroy Valentine, 71, Onamia, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Mille Lacs Hospital in Onamia.
He was born Sept. 25, 1931, in Pulaski Township to John and Ruth (Wallmark) Valentine. He attended school in Platte Township. He worked on an iron ore ship on the Great Lakes for two years. He married Clara Block in 1952. Shortly after being married he was called to active duty in the Army during the Korean War. He spent two years there. He returned from Korea in late 1954 where he joined his wife in Duluth to work at the U.S. Steel Plant. He worked there until the plant closed. They moved back to Morrison County where he worked as a custodian at Lindbergh Elementary School until he retired. They sold their home in Harding in 1997 and moved to the Onamia area. He was a charter member of the VFW Post in Proctor.
Survivors include his wife; and a sister, Gladys Kowalzek, Harding.
His parents; and two brothers, Duane and Clyde, died earlier.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Little Flower Mission Church near Onamia with Father David Gallus officiating. Burial will be in the Onamia Veterans Cemetery in Onamia.
Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. Thursday at the Shelley Funeral Home in Onamia.
