As of April 17, the Social Security Office, 2215 S. Sixth St., Brainerd, will be closed to the public every Thursday and Friday.
People who have questions, wish to report changes or obtain an appointment can still do so on those days by calling the toll-free number, (800)772-1213.
Many direct inputs, including filing for retirement, disability and spouse's benefits can be done using the Web site, www.ssa.gov.
Forms and other information are available at the Web site.
Mail tax forms early
With the deadline for filing income tax returns rapidly approaching, the U.S. Postal Service is bracing itself for the annual onslaught of last minute tax filers.
To avoid the April 15 rush, Brainerd Postmaster Warren D. McQuay said that the Brainerd Post Office will have extended hours from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the main office. The Triangle Store station in Baxter will provide mailing services from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
On April 15, window services will remain open until everyone in line at closing time is served. The post office will make a final collection at the drive-through boxes alongside the post office at midnight and postmark this mail with the April 15 postmark.
Region 5 Board to meet Thursday
The Region 5 Board of Directors will hold its monthly meeting at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Region 5 Office in Staples.
The public is invited to attend.
Effort made to extend cell phone service
In an effort to help rural areas keep pace with communications technology, Rep. Mary Ellen Otremba, DFL-Long Prairie, and a bipartisan group of 21 other rural legislators have introduced a bill to support expansion of cellular phone networks to all parts of rural Minnesota.
Drugs, guns seized in Motley
MOTLEY -- Morrison County Sheriff Michel Wetzel reported area law enforcement personnel searched a home Friday in Motley, seizing a large amount of suspected methamphetamine and a felony amount of suspected marijuana. About 30 guns and $6,000 in cash were seized during the search.
Friday morning, officers from the Motley Police Department, Morrison County Sheriff's Department, Central Minnesota Drug Task Force, Todd County Sheriff's Department and Little Falls Police Department executed a search warrant at the Motley home.
Arrested at the home were a 43-year-old Motley man, an 18-year-old man from Motley and a 30-year-old woman from Big Lake. A 16-year-old Motley girl also was taken into custody.
Numerous surveillance cameras were located and seized on the property.
Controlled substance violation charges are pending against all people arrested, including the 16-year-old girl.
