The Minnesota PCA citizen board's approval of a settlement agreement has cleared the way for construction of the MacMillan Bloedel plant near Deerwood. The MPCA was the last of nine parties to sign the settlement of a lawsuit filed by environmentalists.

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Watland, owners of the Brainerd Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise, were honored by Col. Harland Sanders for earning the QSC Award. Only 4 percent of the nation's 4,500 KFC franchises have won this award.
40 years ago (1970)
North Central Airlines showed a dip in passenger traffic during March. There were 439 passengers boarding compared to 444 a year ago. There were 377 passengers arriving compared to 412 last March.
60 years ago (1950)
Brainerd's first big annual Easter egg hunt will take place Saturday, sponsored by the Brainerd Army Organized Reserve Corps. For children ages 6 to 12 it will occur at the grade school playgrounds. For youngsters ages 3 to 5 it will be at Gregory Park.
80 years ago (1930)
Fishermen may fish in the dark of the moon or even by the light of the moon, if they please, but they must not try to improve upon nature. A law passed by the last Legislature prohibits the use of artificial lights in the taking of fish.
100 years ago (1910)
Thomas Barker, of St. Mathias, but also well known in Brainerd, died after a lingering illness, age 67 years. He was well known in the county and highly esteemed by all. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served with the 5th Vermont Volunteers.
